Dean Jackson runs Dean's Boot Shop in Hobbs, New Mexico. He trained in boot and shoe repair and saddle making, opened his own saddle shop in Lovington in 1980, then apprenticed nights with A.W. 'Bud' Pate in Hobbs before buying Pate's shop and continuing to learn from him for two more years.

Biography

History

Dean Jackson is a custom bootmaker in Hobbs, New Mexico, running Dean's Boot Shop. In a 2019 interview he said he studied boot and shoe repair and saddle making at Texas State Technical Institute in Amarillo starting in 1978, then opened his own saddle shop in Lovington, New Mexico, in May 1980. After a couple of years of saddle work, he began going nights to A. W. ‘Bud’ Pate's boot shop in Hobbs; about six months later Pate sold him the shop and continued the apprenticeship as piece work for roughly two years, until Pate's health forced him to retire. Pate did not teach him inlay work.
