Biography

History

Joe Vasquez was the younger of two brothers who made boots upstairs at M.L. Leddy’s. In a 25 April 2019 interview, bootmaker Mike Vaughn recalled that Joe came downstairs to walk him through the shop and told shop owner Wilson Franklin, “I think this kid will do.” Vaughn described Joe as loud and a jokester, someone who preferred that his older brother Clyde stay and walk a learner through a step rather than demonstrate it once and leave.

No life dates or style number survive for Joe Vasquez. Later accounts that reorder the apprenticeship sequence were not treated as more reliable than Vaughn’s own telling.
