Biography
History
Steven Craig Martin was a bootmaker who apprenticed at Texas Traditions under Charlie Dunn, alongside fellow student Lee Miller. Born in Wichita, he attended Oklahoma State Tech in Okmulgee a year behind Miller (who graduated in 1976) and then moved to Austin to apprentice with Dunn, then 79 years old, who had opened a workshop to pass on his skills.
A 2022 profile of the shop says Martin spent four months searching for Miller and brought him to Austin from Utah; the two worked together in Dunn's shop for three years before Martin left to run Rowell's Shoe and Boot Repair in Austin for more than twenty years. He died on January 4, 2018, at age 68, in Georgetown, Texas. Miller has said that without Martin he would never have met his wife Carrlyn or worked for Dunn at all.
