Biography
History
Arch Baird worked the bench at M. L. Leddy's in San Angelo, Texas, from January 23, 1941 — ‘I stepped off an oil truck and started working for Leddy's at one o'clock,’ he told the local press — until he retired in 2004 at age 91, after 63 years at the same shop. He had first met the shop's founder, Martin Luther Leddy, as a boy, when Leddy repaired the leather and padding on a leg brace Baird wore because of osteomyelitis.
As a bootmaker, Baird specialized in fitting customers with foot or leg abnormalities. Even after retiring he kept coming by to mentor younger bootmakers or help with an equipment problem, riding his electric wheelchair over from the retirement home. He summed up his craft this way: ‘Boots that are made right are the most comfortable thing you can wear. You realize you hardly got anything on your feet.’
