Why collectors care

Republic Boot Company is a Houston Heights custom house with a cheaper ready-made line. Collectors need the shop address, the craft credit, and a way to keep the house separate from Maida’s and from other Houston benches.

Taxonomy here is Bootmaker. Founder Chris Conrad is the business lead, not a bench-trained maker. Widely credited head bootmaker Raúl Cerrillo learned from his father and grandfather in León, then worked in Nogales.

Shop history

Company materials and Texas Monthly date the founding to 2011. A Houston Chronicle feature published 14 January 2023 described a decade in business as of December 2022, which implies about 2012. Keep both tellings visible.

Conrad is a fifth-generation Texan and Texas A&M engineer from oil-and-gas. He hired an original team of three led by Cerrillo. The Chronicle recorded six bootmakers and about ten pairs a week, custom from $1,800 and off-the-shelf from $395. Texas Monthly (September 2025) later printed 50 employees. Company pages later printed custom from $2,200. Headcount and price ladders moved.

The flagship is 1133 E. 11th Street, leased from 2019. Lasts are built up from green foot molds and stored for repeats. The Chronicle describes antique machines and a celastic toe-set in Cerrillo’s process.

Cerrillo’s earlier Wayne, McQueen, Sinatra, and George H. W. Bush work is his résumé, not Republic pairs. Chronicle-named store customers such as José Altuve and J. J. Watt are reputation, not pair certificates.
