Business founded 1938 · Houston, Texas

Rocky Carroll ran R.J.'s Boot Company in Houston, a business his father started in 1938 that Rocky later took over. The shop specialized in conservative, upscale boots with artistic tops such as corporate logos worked in gold and silver, with a 2002 profile citing both Presidents Bush, Governor Rick Perry, and Dolly Parton among its clientele.

History

Rocky Carroll ran R.J.’s Boot Company in Houston, Texas. Joe Nick Patoski’s June 2002 Texas Monthly list says he succeeded his father, who had started the business in 1938, and that he was backed by independent contractors, including a 76-year-old Antonio Sanchez, who worked semi-exclusively out of a garage in Mercedes.

The shop specialized in conservative, upscale boots with artistic tops — including corporate logos worked in gold and silver — priced from $295 with about a two-week turnaround. Both President Bushes, Governor Rick Perry, and Dolly Parton are named as clients. Patoski’s companion piece “Alive and Kicking” (also June 2002) separately names a 76-year-old Antonio Sanchez of Mercedes among the era’s working elders — the same age and town as the contractor credit above. No father’s given name survives.
