Why collectors care
Texas Traditions is the living Austin node collectors meet after hearing the Jerry Jeff Walker song. Need: Is this Charlie’s hand or Lee’s? What paperwork proves shop era? How does TT differ from Heritage Boot Company and Capitol Saddlery?
This is a shop/continuity page. Deep biography stays on Charlie Dunn (born 19 September 1898, died 23 September 1993; shop transfer 1986). Do not reuse the old collapsed shop-sale year as Dunn’s lifespan.
Shop history
- Pre-1977: Dunn at Capitol Saddlery (song era) — separate workplace; do not merge labels.
- 1977: Texas Traditions founded so Dunn can train apprentices; Lee Miller arrives November 1977 after OSU boot school + other shop work (Austin Chronicle).
- 1977–1986: Dunn + apprentices. Miller survives repeated fire/rehire lore (Texas Standard) — cultural color, not construction proof.
- 1986: Dunn retires; Lee & Carrlyn Miller buy/continue Texas Traditions.
- 1986–present: Miller as master; Carrlyn runs the business side; multi-year backlog; apprentices trained in-house because skilled hires are scarce (Chronicle).
- 1993: Dunn’s death — shop already Miller’s; methods continue, authorship does not.

Wait list, Heritage, and the song
- Wait list / price: Press (~2019) cites multi-year waits and roughly $3,000+ starts — soft, changes over time. Encyclopedia language: multi-year backlog is common in press; do not catalog current rates.
- Disambiguation: Heritage Boot Company (South Congress / León small-batch) is not Texas Traditions. Do not merge.
- Song: Cultural marker only — not construction proof (same rule as the Dunn person page).
