Why collectors care

Tony Lama is both a person and the El Paso production house that made exotics mainstream. Founder biography now lives on Tony Lama Sr.. This page keeps company stamps, plants, and later Justin Brands ownership, plus the distinction from the Tony Lama Signature Series line page.

Sources differ on the founding year: the brand uses 1911, TSHA gives 1912, and a 1962 El Paso Times account gives 1913. The approximate range 1911–13 reflects that disagreement.

Tony Lama Sr.: life and career

• Italian immigrant parents; orphaned about age 11; shoemaker apprentice.
• Fort Bliss cobbler (~1910, Sixth Infantry / Pershing context per TSHA).
• Opens the El Paso shop; marries Esther Hernández 1917; six children in the company.
• Dies January 1974; succession Tony Jr. / Bert (Joseph).

Company history

• c. 1911–13: Repair shop + about 20 pairs in year one.
• By 1933: about 40 pairs/day (TSHA).
• WWII leather shortage; postwar boom.
• 1946: Incorporate. 1948: Truman custom — presidential-gift custom begins (soft lore for unlabeled pairs).
• Early 1950s+: Lower heels / rounder toes; colors; exotics (by 1989 about 45% of sales in TSHA-era figures).
• 1967: 1137 Tony Lama Street plant (TSHA). 1976: about 3,100 pairs/day, 780 employees.
• 1971: Public company.
• Urban Cowboy boom ~1980–81, then fade.
• 1980s subsidiaries (New Heyer / Larry Mahan and others) — many short-lived. The later status of each subsidiary needs separate documentation.
• August 1990: Merge into Justin Industries → Berkshire 2000.
