- Name: Charles Russell Dunn (Wikipedia / secondary bios).
- Birth: 19 September 1898, houseboat on the White River, Arkansas (Famous Texans; Discover Texas; Wikipedia). Family later to Glory near Paris, Texas.
- Family craft: Multi-generation bootmakers (press: father/grandfather/great-grandfather; Smithsonian/CBDB synthesis: Irish cobbler lineage / name Duam→Dunn). Began apprenticing about age 7–8; first complete pair often cited about age 11.
- Itinerant years: West Texas shops; Fort Sam Houston era in the 1930s noted in Famous Texans.
- Capitol Saddlery, Austin: Long back-room tenure (Famous Texans: from about 1945 to retirement 1973; Walker’s 1972 lyric places him sewing in the back of Capitol Saddlery). This is the era the song immortalizes.
- Brief retirement (about 1973–1977, Mesquite in some accounts), then return.
