Double-H Boots · History

Why collectors care

Double-H is a Pennsylvania work-western manufacturing house, not a Texas artisan shop and not historic Tennessee Acme. Collectors need the 2002 Acme purchase so a late Acme mark is not read as Clarksville or Ashland City golden-age production.

Taxonomy here is manufacturing company. Sibling context is Berkshire footwear and H.H. Brown, not Justin Brands.

Company history

Company Our Story dates western and work footwear from 1955 in Richland, Pennsylvania. The factory later printed is Martinsburg, Pennsylvania. Company copy says the 1970s brought the first U.S. maker of safety-toe western boots meeting Class 75 ANSI.

The house was renamed Double-H Boots in 1993 to mark H.H. Brown heritage. Warren Buffett’s 1991 Berkshire Hathaway chairman’s letter called H.H. Brown “the leading North American manufacturer of work shoes and boots.” The 70th-anniversary page cites UFCW Local 1776 Keystone State at the Martinsburg factory.

In spring 2002 Double-H / H.H. Brown bought the Acme Boot Company name. A post-2002 Acme mark lives on this corporate family. It is not evidence of mid-century Tennessee Acme production.
