Biography

Terry O'Neal (“T.O.”) Stanley was born 6 December 1940 in Big Spring, Texas. Before his own label he trained under A.C. Williams (Dallas) and Zeferino Rios (Mercedes) — lineage stated in Texas Monthly (June 2002).

Texas Monthly (2002) states that before running Stanley Boots and Belts he bought Rios of Mercedes.

His obituary notes a 1959 World Champion calf-roping belt buckle and a lifelong horseman identity.

In 1979 he founded T.O. Stanley Boot Company in El Paso. He sold to retailers as well as individuals. In the 2002 Texas Monthly profile he said he had quit making boots himself because he was “a perfectionist and couldn't please myself,” with a crew turning out product — important for whose hands are on a given pair.

Death: 13 January 2023, El Paso. Survived by daughter Kara (Stanley) Chilleri-Davis and son Todd Stanley. Self-description (obituary): “a Bootmaker above all things.”

Multiple sources agree he made boots for three U.S. presidents, with George W. Bush named in several places. Texas Monthly (2002) lists Linda Gray, Nick Nolte, Sammy Davis Jr., Eric Clapton, George Lucas, and Wayne Gretzky.
